The Shady Man

In one of our lectures for narrative design, the lecturer pointed out every character is made from basic shapes. This simple fact had remained hidden from us students, and it was like a revolutionary epiphany in our heads. This little project was inspired of that, making a character almost completely out of triangles:

 1) First I did a rough idea and pose, not concentrating at all on detail and making sure everything had a pointy edge to it.
2) In this blown up rough sketch I added more detail. I replaced the hat idea for a simple triangle instead, it looked better.
 3) After drawing the rough sketch I made a refined version, strengthening the line.
4) I begun the shading by starting with a dark grey. The light source is coming from behind the character so the edges of the figure are left out from the shade.
 5) I shaded each part of the body individually here.

6) I then added gradient shading to the body and under the hat.
7) I then added some lighting to the eye and more shading to the boots.
